Dear Dawn,

I write to you on behalf of the group observing currently on VTT
at Tenerife lead by Dr. H.Wohl who wrote to you before.

We would like to ask for TRACE observing time on 5th April 2002
with the following details :

- WL 5000 A, Lyman alpha and 1600 A channels

- timing and targets :

08:00-10:00 UT : NOAA group 9889 near the disk center
10:00-12:00 UT : new AR which comes on the east limb
(sorry I do not have its NOAA number
		     at my disposal yet)

- S/N ration is also important so please select the exposure
time accordingly to have it sufficient for the quiet solar
atmoshere measurements in the vicinity of these ARs.

Many thanks beforehand from all members of the group

Jan Rybak

Dear Dawn,

the east limb target should be AR NOAA 9893 which was at 16.32 Apr 4th, 2002
at N 18 and E 78. Of course some motion to the west will be done till
tomorrow 10 UT.

Nevertheless this is perhaps too late for you...

With best wishes from Tenerife

Jan R.

Dear Dawn,

as we have checked already on the TRACE web page the planned
operation of TRACE for 5th April was prepared including our request.
MANY THANKS FOR YOUR PERSONAL AS WELL AS FOR TRACE TEAM SUPPORTS.

Just to inform you briefly we can report from Tenerife that
we were able overcome all minor technical problems and we have
acquired the high resolution spectra of solar granulation
as we have in mind (Fe I 5576 A + Fe I 6301 A + Fe I 6302 A
lines including some other ones in their vicinity). We have
followed evolution of granulation very near to the ARs we have
selected in the time intervals which were asked for TRACE support.

Now we work on data storage and soon (when we will return
back home) reduction of these data will be started.
TRACE data we will take from your archive of course.

For tomorrow we do not need the TRACE support.

For next days we will send a message again until 16.00 UT day
before.

Have we understood well that there is no change to get the
TRACE support for days after April 7th until April 17th ?

Many thanks for the support again.

I am looking for your answers

Jan Rybak, on behalf of the Dr.H.Wohl's team at VTT, Tenerife

Dear Dawn,

today I have checked the TRACE targets of 5/4/2002 in the Operation part
of your web side. The GIF file info shows clearly that we have really
achieved the coordinated observations in positions on the Sun and time.

Many thanks again for your input.

BTW on Friday and Saturday we have clouds here...

Dr. Wohl have taken some digital snapshots from these days so you can see
them at URL http://www.kis.uni-freiburg.de/~hw/ selecting item 'News for
you',
and then 'April 5, 2002: New snapshots of my spring 2002 observing campaign
are given in the snapshot section.'

With best wishes from Tenerife

Dear Dawn,

sorry for disturbing you for a moment but it's me again (Jan Rybak) on behalf of
the group you have supported this April for their spectroscopic measurements
with the German VTT telescope at Tenerife by operating the TRACE.

I have made several attempts to reach these data, e.g. at USA-EAST data archive
searching for the run

STD.dynamics 135ah 5-APR-02 08:00:03 -- 12:00:03 ( 240.0 min)

but without success.

I have also filled the Project form as follows :

Project Id: 1027
Title: Structure, evolution and dynamics of granulation
Objective: Following the temporal evolution of the granular structure of the solar
photosphere as the upper part of the convective motions in the solar surface layers
Approach: Spectroscopic observations of the Doppler and Zeeman Fe I spectral lines
with high resolution from which the thermodynamical parameters of the solar photosphere
are derived using the spectral line profiles inversion.
Special TRACE support was managed during the observing period at VTT Tenerife
performing the co-aligned WL, L alpha imaging around the spectrograph's entrance
slit position.

Data Requirements: 05/04/2002 : 08:00-12:00 UT 04/04/2002 : 09:00-11:00 UT

Created: 2002-10-31 08:11:21.0
Last Modified: 2002-11-01 07:19:21.0

but no access to the TRACE data through the TRACE data catalogue is possible.
The reply form is still empty.

I have already asked the advised person (David Schiff at schiff@lmsal.com)
but no reply has appeared.

Nevertheless, these data are not on the Missing Data page listed.

Could you give me an advice how to continue ?

With best wishes

Jan Rybak

Dear TRACE colleagues,

Dr. Hurlburt has informed me during the SacPeak workshop that TRACE
will be still in business also after Oct 1! Happy with this great
information
I would like to ask you for TRACE support of our following SST/DOT observing
campaign:

- period 2005.10.18--2005.10.31 (14days):
- coordinator: Jan Rybak (choc@astro.sk)
- title: Spectroscopy and imaging tomography of the solar fibrils:
         photospheric drivers and coronal consequences
         (http://www.solarphysics.kva.se/schedule2005.html)
- targets: quit sun, both disk center and near limb, selected day in advance
according to actual situation at the Sun
- procedure: Lyman alpha, with WL, 1600, 1550, and 171 every ~10 minutes
             for context.

This campaign is planning to support the SOHO JOP171, lead by my
PhD student Peter Gomory (gomory@astro.sk) who is asking for
CDS/SOHO instrument only for this period.

All other requests to other instruments (TRACE, MDI, EIT) we plan to
submit via my SST/DOT campaign.

At first I have checked your TRACE future observing plans,
as of 25 August 2005 at http://chippewa.nascom.nasa.gov/TRACE/ops/
timeline/monthly_plan/current_plan.txt.

I see there mainly:

1/ quiet-Sun study with MDI and CDS
      POC: Daniel Brown <dob@aber.ac.uk>
TRACE: 195, with 171 and 1600 every ~10 minutes for context.
      Target: within MDI high-res.

2/ 19, 26 Oct.: EIT Shutterless #21, TBC

3/ MWF: central-meridian synoptic observations in UV/WL/171
   INO: network-internetwork oscillations
HRW: survey of high-frequency running waves

With program 1/ it seems we cannot cooperate (its own CDS lines,
TRACE high temperature channels). Programs 3/ seems to be very short
so I do not expect real conflicts.

My questions are:

Q1: can we get TRACE support for the La/Palma morning hours (07:00-13:00)
shifting all other programs 1/, 2/, and 3/ for the rest of the days?

Q2: Can we get a contact to PI of program 2/ EIT shutterless #21?
Maybe we can cooperate finding a common target and profit from
cooperative data acquisition of our data.

Of course, I am open for compromises which can come due to oversubscribed
TRACE. Please just let me know in which way such compromise can be reached.
Then I can send you more technical details for TRACE observations we plan
to run.

Looking forward to hear from you

Jan Rybak

Dear colleagues,

west wishes from La Palma! I am writing in order to ask
for continuation of the TRACE support for our JOP 171
and SST+DOT/LaPalma for Monday Oct 24.

We have got support of CDS from 13:30 on that day
so we would like to ask for TRACE from 13:30 till
23:30 - the same measurements as we made for us on
Oct 18 and 19. The target should be the disk center.

Here at LaPalma we have got nice DOT data together with
TRACE and CDS on Oct 19. I do hope next week we will
be so lucky as well. t present there are coulds around us.
More details at http://www.astro.sk/~choc/05_campaign/05_campaign.html

I ma looking forward for your answer.

With best wishes

Jan Rybak

Dear colleagues,

west wishes from La Palma! I am writing in order to ask
for continuation of the TRACE support for our JOP 171
and SST+DOT/LaPalma for Tuesday Oct 25.

We expect that we will get support of CDS from 07:00 on that day
so we would like to ask for TRACE data also from that hour.

We would like to continue with these measurements until the
end of the CDS support which should last until 13:25 or
even (this is still not confirmed) until end of the EIT
sutterless campaign.

We ask for the same measurements as TRACE made for us on
Oct 18 and 19. The target should be the disk center.

Here at LaPalma we have got nice DOT data together with
TRACE and CDS on Oct 19. I do hope next week we will
be so lucky as well. At present there is clear sky but bad seeing.
But we hope tomorrow will be better.

I am looking forward for your answer.

Yes, we would like to extend it until start of the EIT shutterless campaign

Dear Dawn,

sorry I have forgotten that the EIT shutterless is only day after
tomorrow and not tomorrow - this point is wrong in my last
email. Nevertheless the CDS was confirmed until 17:00 therefore
it would be nice to have TRACE also till that hour...

For other days of this week (except Oct 26) we would welcome
the TRACE support from 07:00 until 19:30 as CDS was promised
to be run fo us from 6:30 until 19:30 (listed there as JOP171).
On Oct 26 it would bre nice to end just before EIT shutterless.

The same program (Ly-a, with WL, 1600, 1550, and 171 every ~10 minutes
in context) as on Oct 18 or 19 was made for us.

The target is disk center for tomorrow, for the rest of the
days we have not decided yet.

With best wishes

Jan R.

Tomorrow we have CDS from 07:00-20:00 for the disk center as a target
so we would welcome TRACE for the same target and duration.

We will inform you about the target for next days later.

Dear Dr. Tarbell,

many thanks for your reply as well for your TRACE support.

No, I do not get these images, please if it is possible add my
name to the mailing list.

Unfortunately we have a storm here at La Palma (wind 30m/s, completely
cloudly, some rain). But we do hope that TRACE, MDI and CDS are
getting data not influenced by these g-b conditions we have here.

Planning for day 300 is o.k. for us. For day 301 we would like to
follow the same pattern.

Until what time should you get information for days 302, 303 and 304 ?
Day 304 is our last day of the campaign.

With best wishes from La Palma

Dear Dr. Tarbell,

thanks for information, I have subscribed to the mailing list 'trave_annouce'.

Weather at La Palma has improved considerably but till now only for turists...
There is beautifulll clear sky but lmost no wind and seeing is so very bad.
But we hope...

In the email > Subject: TRACE Plans for DOY 301
you have written, that for JOP 171 you do not perform 1600 images, just 1550 ones.
Can be that channel used for correction of the 1216 channel as well? To my
knowledge, the 1600 channel is needed. Would you be so kind to check this and
drop me a line to the email message? In case that 1600 channel is needed please
add it to the 171,1550,WL sequence each 20 cycles.

With best wishes from La Palma

Jan Rybak

Dear TRACE colleagues,

I would like to ask you for the TRACE support of the following
SST+DOT/LaPalma observing campaign:

- title: Spectroscopy and imaging tomography of the solar fibrils:
	  photospheric drivers and coronal consequences

- period: 2006.04.11-04.26 (16 days)

- coordinator: Jan Rybak (choc@astro.sk)

- proposal: http://www.astro.sk/~choc/open/06_opticon_sstdot/rybak_sst_dot_06.pdf

- campaign approved and granted by the observing time of SST and DOT:
  SST schedule: http://www.solarphysics.kva.se/schedule2006.html
  DOT schedule: http://dot.astro.uu.nl/web-schedule2006.txt

- targets: quit sun near the disk center, target selected day in advance
according to actual situation at the Sun

- procedure: - sequences of 171 A and 1550 A images (is it possible to
alternate them one after other in the sequence?),
interrupted with a set of WL, 1600A, 1216A images every ~10
	       minutes for context,
             - if alternation of 171 A and 1550 A images one after other is
not possible we then prefer to add the 1550 A image or 171A
image to the set of context images (in this case we plan
to exchange these two channels in different observing day)
	     - exposure time specified using the automatic mode
	     - 1024x1024 or 512x512 images

- time requested: each day from 07:00 till 17:00 UT if possible,
if not the morning hours are more needed (till 13:30 UT)

This campaign is requesting also support by some SOHO instruments (MDI,
EIT, CDS) in parallel.

Operation of the campaign will be performed directly at LaPalma at
the SST but using my home email address choc@astro.sk.

At first I have checked your TRACE future observing plans
http://chippewa.nascom.nasa.gov/TRACE/current_plan.txt.
I see there mainly: 12, 19 April 2006: EIT Shutterless #23. 18-24UT
With this program I do not expect real conflicts.

Of course, we are open for compromises which can come due to oversubscribed
TRACE later. Please just let me know in which way such compromise can be
reached. We are also open to accept some other technical limitations
of the TRACE instruments.

Looking forward to hear from you whether you can support our g-b
observations with your superb TRACE images again and with many
thanks beforehand

Dear Dawn,

many thanks for your reply again. It seems to me this is the third time
you are on duty in the TRACE team to help us with the TRACE support
for our g-b observing campaign...

> We have penciled in your coordination on the TRACE calendar. As you say we
> do have the EIT shutterless which will be priority for us on the 12th &
> 19th of April.

Thanks a lot. Of course, EIT shutterless will be priority on the 12th &
19th of April.

> With regards to your program because of possible data loss due to the
> quadrant selector, I would suggest running 171 A in the main and
> everything else in context. We can do the sequence of 171 & 1550 for
> possibly a few hours if desired but the entire observing period would be

> approaches.

OK. So following your reply we would prefer to have 3 modes of observations:
1/ running 171 A in the main and everything else in context
2/ running 1550 A in the main and everything else in context
3/ sequence of 171 & 1550 for a few hours then mode 1/ or 2/

Each day only one mode will be of interest.
The mode 3/ will be requested only in the case that the first 2 mode will
be already realized and all technical things at SST,DOT,SOHO/CDS will be
running perfectly and there will be high chance for excellent seeing
(and not on Sunday or Monday).
We agree that this details can be solved when our observing window will
approach.

> Please be advised that TRACE requires pointing information the day before
> an observation is to take place and that we will need pointing information
> for Saturday, Sunday and Monday on the preceding Friday.

Yes, we know. Could you please reply what is the optimal time [hours] to get
pointing information for the TRACE planning?

With many thanks for your help

Jan Rybak

Dear Dawn,

many thanks for your reply again.

>I am the TRACE planner for the start of your JOP next week. As a reminder
>TRACE will need pointing the day before an observation by 12 noon Goddard
>time and on Friday I will need target information for Saturday, Sunday and
>Monday. Could you please confirm your prime observing time?

Yes, I will send you the target not later than at 16 UT on April 10 for
April 11, and so on the next days. On Friday information for Saturday,
Sunday and Monday will be sent.

Our prime observing time is from 07:00 till 13:30 UT. It would be nice
to have these run extended to 17 UT is possible.

>Also your program is asking for 171 and 1550 alternating which we may be
>able to do for a few hours but not necessarily all day, we will need to
>see how things go next week.

OK, no problem. So let us start with the first from the 3 following
modes of TRACE observations:
1/ running 171 A in the main and everything else in context
2/ running 1550 A in the main and everything else in context
3/ sequence of 171 & 1550 for a few hours then mode 1/ or 2/

Extremely important for us is to have 171 being exposed at 7:00 and
also around 13:00 UT as at this time EIT is doing exposures in this
channel - we need this for coalignemnt purposes with other instruments.

For the next days only one mode will be of interest. The mode 3/ will be
requested only in the case that the first 2 mode will be already realised
and all technical things at SST,DOT,SOHO/CDS will be running perfectly
and there will be high chance for excellent seeing at LaPalma
(and not on Sat, Sun or Mon).

So I will write to you again on April 10.

Wishing nice weekend days

Jan Rybak

Dear Dawn,

sorry we are late now with our answer, but we were busy here at SST.

No, we do not need to track the target, so please keep the coordinates
of the target (aslo for all other days) fixed.

With best wishes

Dear Dawn,

please put the 1550 channel as the main one, i.e. our mode 2/, and
the 171 channel to the list of all other channels performed once
after ~10 minutes for all 3 days April 15-17.

Today we have had finally clear sky in the morning, we have acquired
some DOT data (http://www.dot.iac.es/current.html) but seeing was too bad
for the large 1m SST entrance lens.

Nevertheless we have obtained thanks to you 3 very nice CDS~TRACE data
sets and one CDS~TRACE~DOT data set in the few previous days.
Therefore I would like to thank you very much on behalf of the whole our
team (Ales Kucera, Julius Koza, Peter Gomory and myself) for you excellent
support.

Wishing you nice Eastern day from La Palma

Dear Dr. Wolfson,

many thanks for your first email!

For Apr 18 we would like to keep the 1550 channel as the main one,
as it was during the Eastern days.

> Hope you get some good seeing. Sounds like it has been
> pretty sparse thus far.

For all the days except today it was true. Fortunately this morning
seeing was moderate and we were able to acquire 4 time series of spectra
at SST supported by the DOT imaging. So Apr 15 was the first day when all
the instruments selected for the campaign were working properly focused
at the quite region north from the spot of the AR 10873!

There is a web page related to the campaign where you can read
my last notes and a continuosly extended summary of the campaign:
http://www.astro.sk/~choc/06_campaign/06_campaign.html

I shall send tou the pointing for Apr 18 on Apr 17 just after midday [UT].

Dear colleagues,

as Astrid Veronig has already informed you until the remaining time of the campaign
the scheduling of our JOP 171 + DOT campaign will be made by myself.

Here is the target for Thu (11/Jul):

Tuesday, 11/Jul:
================

JOP171 + DOT target position: Xcen = +150", Ycen = -150", i.e. we will change for the AR 10899.

CDS:
----
Please, use VARDYN_D (or VARDYN_C) study if it is possible using the same timing
as during the last week.

MDI:
----
Please remain in HR mode. The hr_ve_fe_me around disk center during this Continuous
Contact period is perfect for us.

TRACE:
------
Please follow our target with the same program as during the last week if possible
(in case Dr. Pasachoff's SST La Palma observations allow this).

DOT:
----
Please keep the leading spot of the AR in right upper corner of the DOT FOV
if possible.

With the best wishes and many thnaks beforehand

Jan Rybak

of the shocks and location of the acoustic flux generation

- period: 2006.11.16-2006.11.26 (16 days)

- leader : Ales Kucera (akucera@astor.sk)
- coordinator of the TRACE support: Jan Rybak (choc@astro.sk)

- proposal: http://www.astro.sk/~choc/open/06_opticon_vtt/proposal/
                   kucera_vtt_2006_proposal.pdf

- campaign approved and granted by the observing time of VTT:
  VTT schedule: http://www.kis.uni-freiburg.de/obsvtt/vttplan2006.pdf

- targets: quit sun near the disk center or at mju~0.5,
target selected day in advance according to actual situation on
           the Sun

- procedure: - sequences of 1216 A images
interrupted with a set of WL, 1600A, 1550A images every ~10
               minutes for context,
             - exposure time specified using the automatic mode
             - 1024x1024 or 512x512 images

- TRACE period requested: 18/11-26/11/2006

- TRACE time requested: each day from 08:00 till 12:00 UT if possible

Operation of the campaign will be performed directly at Tenerife at
the VTT but using my home email address choc@astro.sk.

At first I have checked your TRACE future observing plans
http://chippewa.nascom.nasa.gov/TRACE/current_plan.txt without any
other program. Of course, except the winter eclipse season...

Looking forward to hear from you whether you can support our g-b
observations with your superb TRACE images again and with many
thanks beforehand

Dear TRACE planners,

we have applied for the observing time in a frame
of the joint observing campaign of the SOHO/SUMER
and HINODE/EIS spectrometers. This program was
included to the SOHO+HINODE April 2007 campaign
(program 25) scheduled for week 15.

For our scientific goals it would be great if we can get
also support of the TRACE instrument.

Our main aim is to study upper parts of the solar
atmosphere (i.e. chromosphere, transition region and
corona) in order to identify the most probable
physical mechanism responsible for the heating of the
solar corona localized particularly in/above
chromospheric network. The detailed scientific
justification of our observing program and the description
of the SUMER and EIS observing details can be found at
http://www.mps.mpg.de/homes/curdt/hinode/HINODE_cases.html
(observing program nr. 25).

To reach our goals it is very important to obtain
also high resolution 2D images of the solar corona
localized above chromospheric network. Therefore,
TRACE measurements taken in the 171 A channel will
definitely improve the quality and complexity of
our observing campaign. The details of the planned
TRACE measurements are listed below.

TRACE observing details:
------------------------
- FOV: 512" x 512"
- spectral channel: 171 A - corona
(+ one exposure taken every ~15 minutes
in the WL and 1600 A channel = data for
the spatial coalig. with other instruments)
- exposure time: controlled by automatic
                 exposure control
- total run duration: minimum: ~3.5 hours
                      optimum: ~7.0 hours
- no compensation of the solar rotation
- target: quiet Sun near disk center
- pointing: specified via e-mail a day in advance

We would be very obliged if the TRACE will be able to support
our program with this type of observations. Therefore we
would be obliged to hear from you whether this is possible
in frame of the SOHO+HINODE campaign scheduled for April
2007 (week 15 in our case).

With best wishes and many thanks beforehand

Peter Gomory, coordinator of the SOHO/HINODE April 2007 program 25

                  POC:kathy reeves <kreeves@cfa.harvard.edu>

27 Aug - 14 Oct 2007: JOP 178 will run sometime in this period w/VTT/SST/THEMIS
                  POC:Brigitte Schmieder <Brigitte.Schmieder@obspm.fr>

I hope that there will be a change to manage requirements of all programs
to provide some time for each group. (On the other side, for some days we
can cosider/decide to follow the target selected by other programs.)

Looking forward to hear from you whether you can support our g-b
observations with your superb TRACE images again and with many
thanks beforehand

I staying tuned to know about Kathy's and Brigitte's planing details. I hope,
additionally, that for at least some days we could share the same target
(AR around the disk center if available).

Dear Dawn,

many thanks for your email and your suggestion.

We completely agree.

So for our microflare/network campaign : 20-31/8/2007 : 07:00-13:30 UT definitely.
Possibly also for some days between 03-20/8.

For cooperation between 03-20/8 it would be very good to have information about
filament/prominence target positions well in advance to be able either to follow
it with rest of "our" instruments or to be able to specify our own target in
case no good target for the filaments and prominence campaigns present themselves.
How to manage this? Do you have a suggestion?

With best wishes

Jan Rybak

Dear Dawn or David McKenzie (planner in charge),

as I have promised I repeat our wish for the TRACE support of our campaign as you have
informed me that TRACE support is possible:

Our target : network regions or active regions (if available) near the disk center
Our prime observing time: 07:00-13:30 UT
Our channel: 171 + (WL, 1600, Lyman alpha) each ~10 minutes

For any case I will send you our target coordinated for our camapign starting Aug 3.
Of course, we understand that for the period 03 - 20 August the filament and prominence
campaigns are the priority.

There is a dedicated web page for our DOT+SOHO+HINODE campaign at
http://www.astro.sk/~choc/open/07_dot/07_dot.html where details on our
goals and coordination of instruments involved are given in detail.

I stay tuned for your answers in hope for fruitful cooperation (as usually).

With best wishes

Jan Rybak

Perfect news! I will do sending targets according your schedule.

For your TRACE weekly planning meeting on Thursdays (at 11.30am PDT/12.30pm
MDT/2.30pm EDT):

JOP 189: preference time slot: 07:00-13:30 UT
         program: full FOV 171 AEC w/WL, 1600A, 1550A, 1216 images every ~10 minutes

Very good. Please reply with her email address. Otherwise I will use just
trace_planner@lmsal.com in order to contact her.

> Clear Skies,

Peter Gomory from our team is leaving for La Palma to join the DOT team to do our
the best to get also perfect DOT data. Fortunately the fire will start also on
La Palma (as Tenerife is in fire...).

With many thanks for your support in advance

Jan Rybak, on behalf of the JOP189 team

Dear colleagues,

today I have recognized that contents of the http://trace.lmsal.com/last_movies/
web page, providing very informative movies of data taken by TRACE each day
is not updated (last movie July 19 only).

Is it possible to restart this service again? Is it very helpful for a lot of observes
interested in the just taken TRACE data I guess.

With best wishes
