PREDNASAJUCI / LECTURER : Mária Hajduková NAZOV / TITLE : Interstellar meteors – on the statistical significance of hyperbolic orbits ABSTRAKT / ABSTRACT : So far, the only measurable property of interstellar meteoroids (orbits of which are hyperbolic with respect to the Sun) is their hyperbolic speed. The distribution of hyperbolic excesses in their heliocentric speed, measured at the Earth’s distance, is anticipated to reach its peak just a few km.s−1 above the Sun’s escape velocity. This small quantity, which needs to be measured, is of the same order of magnitude as currently common measurement errors, which depend on the instruments used and on the reduction procedure employed. Therefore, in the search for interstellar meteors, an error analysis is crucial. The uncertainty in heliocentric speed, which arises from both geocentric speed and radiant position, can be visualized through a graph that incorporates these quantities (based on the original work of Kresak and Kresakova, 1976). This approach enables the estimation of statistical significance on the resulting hyperbolic orbits in the data and provides an assessment of the accuracy of measurement errors given in the tested catalogue.
