PREDNASAJUCI / LECTURER : Vojtech Rušin NAZOV / TITLE : Journey behind the black Sun ABSTRAKT / ABSTRACT : Research on the solar corona at the Astronomical Institute of the SAS began with the first expedition to Poland in 1954. It continued with the observation of the corona in 1964 in the Crimea. In 1973, the Institute sent an eight-member solar eclipse expedition to Niger to observe the white-light and emission corona and the intramercurial planets during the third-longest total eclipse, lasting 7 minutes and three seconds. The journey through the largest desert – the Sahara, was made with two cars. The results of this trip supported corona research in Czechoslovakia, and since 1993 in Slovakia, and thus complemented the observations of the emission corona from the Observatory on Lomnický Štít. The corona is the medium in which our Earth is also found. In my talk I will introduce you to the most important experiences we had during our trip to the eclipse.
